The clever Hare and the Cruel Lion: An English story

Panchtantra Story in English - The one who has intelligence is powerful (The clever Hare and the cruel Lion story).

A powerful lion lived in a huge forest. Apart from being powerful, he was also very ruthless and arrogant. The lion's name was Adham. The animals of the forest trembled at the sight of him. Wherever he went, he would kill many animals and eat some of them and throw away some without eating.

Frustrated with the lion, the animals of the jungle called a meeting. All the animals of the jungle attended this meeting. In the meeting, a discussion was held regarding getting rid of the cruel lion. It was decided in the meeting that all the animals will go to the lion and request him not to kill any animal. In return, one animal from the forest will be sent one by one to become food for the lion.

One day all the animals of the jungle gathered and went to the lion and put forward their proposal. The lion also agreed to the animals' proposal. But he threatened the animals that if one day no animal comes to the lion, from that day onwards he will start hunting more animals. After that day, the fear of the animals of the forest ended, and now they could roam around in the forest without any worry, and even the lion could get food while sitting.

For many days, as per the rule, one animal after another went to the lion. One day it was the turn of a rabbit. The rabbit was going to the lion but was unable to walk due to fear. He was going slowly in the forest. He found a well on the way. He sat near the well for some time.

When he looked into the well, he saw his own reflection in the well. Seeing that reflection, many thoughts started coming to the rabbit's mind. Thinking about something, he slowly reached the lion's cave. By then, the lion had become restless due to hunger. And now he was about to go out to kill animals in the forest when the rabbit reached the lion and greeted him.

Seeing the rabbit, the lion's anger reached the seventh sky. He roared and said to the rabbit, "I am getting restless with hunger, and the animals of the forest have sent a small person like you to make me food. Now I will kill all the animals of the forest."

Hearing the lion's words, the rabbit humbly said, "Your Majesty, please do not get angry. Neither I nor the other animals of the forest are the reason for my delay. If you forgive me, I would like to tell you the whole story." The lion said, "Hey rabbit, whatever you want to say, say it quickly; I am very hungry."

The rabbit bowed his head humbly and said, "My lord, I am very small; that is why the animals of the forest sent five rabbits like me to serve you. When we were coming from the forest, another lion came and asked the reason for our coming here." When we talked about coming to you, he called you very bad and cowardly and started calling himself the king of the jungle.

He has also challenged you to a battle. He ate four out of five rabbits and left me alive and sent me to you so that I can give you information about him and take you to him. Maharaj, this is the reason why I got late in coming here.

On hearing the rabbit's words, the lion said, "Rabbit, please take me to that lion as soon as possible. I want to teach that wicked man a lesson as soon as possible. He has challenged me. He has the guts to come to my kingdom and challenge me for a battle." On hearing the lion's words, the rabbit said, "Your Majesty! Fighting a war is the job of brave men like you. But the enemy is hiding in his fort, and an enemy hiding in a fort is very dangerous.

The lion said, "You are right, but I have full faith in my strength. I will crush that wicked in a jiffy." Hearing the lion's words, the rabbit took him to the well and said, "My lord! This is the well in which the other lion is hiding, and from this very place he was challenging you for a fight."

The rabbit took the lion to the edge of the well. When the lion looked into the well, he saw his own reflection. He thought that this was the other lion who was challenging him. The lion roared loudly. The echo of his roar echoed back to the lion from the well with the same speed.
Thinking that echo to be the voice of his enemy, the wicked lion jumped into the well in anger and could not come out of the well and died by drowning. The rabbit killed the powerful lion with the power of his intelligence.

The rabbit returned from there and went to the forest and told the news of the lion's death to all the animals. Hearing the news of the lion's death, a wave of happiness ran among all the animals of the forest, and everyone praised the intelligence of the rabbit, and now everyone started living peacefully in the forest.

Moral: "The story of the lion and the clever rabbit teaches us that only the one who has intelligence is powerful."
