Use Of Has,Have and Had in English Speaking


Here are some points to remember when using 'have' and 'has'.
Both can be used in English Speaking to show ownership and are important in making the 'perfect tenses'.

'Had' is the past tense of both ‘has’ and ‘have'.

What is the verb has used for?
  • We can use the verb 'has' to show ownership of something. 
  • It can also be used for present tense  and 
  • perfect tenses sentences.
  • Use the verb has for the third person singular subjects.

Examples of using the verb have:

When using the verb has you will use he, she or it.

She has a pet horse.
He has a girlfriend.

 has rained all day (example of present perfect)
Jane  has your pen. (Third person singular)

What is the verb have used for?

You can use the verb 'have' for the following:
  • Describe something that has to happen.
  • Somebody is  in ownership of something. 
  • Affirmative sentences.

Examples of using the verb have:

 we can use  'You' and 'I',we','they' with have.
You have a nice motorbike.
I have a great music teacher.
You have ice-cream on your pant.
I have to go to the market now.
They have a pet animal.
We have a smart baby boy.



What is the verb had used for?

You can use the verb 'had' for the following:
  • Third person singular subjects.
  •  past tense.

Examples of using the verb had:

The next list shows things that you have possession or have happened.
These 3 are singular subjects.
I had a car (you no longer have a car).
He had a mobile phone.
She had a doll.

These 2 are plural subjects.(plural).
They had a car.
We had a gossip.

Combining have and had

When you join have and had it is a combination of two verbs:
  • present tense have
  • past perfect object had
I have had breakfast. (I have eaten breakfast)
I have had a shower. (I have taken a shower)

Have + had = present perfect.

This means while using "have had" it is only the present perfect of the verb "to have".
