Use of Apostrophe S
(‘s)
Using an apostrophe to show possession/ownership
To show that something belongs
to something (or someone).
Use an apostrophe after the noun and add the letter s:
Example-
- Ram’s book / Book of Ram.
- My brother’s pen / The pen of my brother
- Mobile’s cover / The cover of mobile.
- Roy ‘s house/ The house of Roy.
- My father’s friend’s son /The son of my father’s friend.
Important points-
When
the singular form of the word already ends in an s, There is a two way to use Apostrophe(‘).
Either you can simply put apostrophe sign (‘) after that word or you can add
extra s after apostrophe(‘).
- The class’ students / The class’s students
- Lucas’ father / Lucas’s father.
- The boss’ car / The boss’s car
If
the word is a regular plural (i.e. a noun made plural with an s), we must not
use ‘s’ after apostrophe , to show possession.
- The girls’ clothes (NOT the girls’s clothes)
- My friends’ favorite hotel (NOT my friends’s favorite hotel)
- The students’ homes (NOT the students’s home).
If
the word is made plural without an s (an irregular plural), then you can use an
s after the apostrophe.
- The men’s shirt.
- The teeth’s color.
- The people’s choices.
*an important exception to this rule is the word “it”. Since
the contraction form of “It is” is “it’s”, we show possession for “it” by
writing “its”.
- The dog ate its food quickly.
Thank You!
